BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores’ pharmacies has expanded its $4 prescription drug program to include up to 350 generic medications for $10 for a 90-day supply, additional women’s health medications and a new $4 OTC offer, which now represents over 1,000 OTC items priced at $4 or less, the company announced yesterday. With the rollout of Phase III of the program, which was launched in September 2006, Wal-Mart has cut prices on nearly one-third of its OTC medications, priced $4 or less, or about 50% lower than the national drug and supermarket chains. Goldman Sachs pointed out in a research note that the $4 generic program gives Wal-Mart a public relations benefit by offering its drug customers significant savings. It also provides an opportunity to take share away from mail order and gain critical share with female shoppers by making breast cancer, menopause and osteoporosis drugs affordable and driving traffic to promote cross-shopping.
