NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Wal-Mart Stores is regaining a price edge on rival Target, according to a survey from Customer Growth Partners here.

CGP’s analysis of prices on a similar basket of 58 items including back-to-school goods and groceries in four states during late July and early August indicated Wal-Mart had a 2.4% edge, in contrast to a 0.6% edge Target had in the first three months of the year.

Craig Johnson, president of CGP, told SN that Wal-Mart’s lower price positioning since April reflects a competitive reaction to Target and discount grocers such as Aldi as well as a reluctance to pass along price increases on items such as apparel. Target regains a 2.6% favorable pricing edge vs. Wal-Mart when accounting for the 5% discount for shoppers using its Redcard, CGP added.
