Wal-Mart to Unveil Sustainability Index: Reports

Wal-Mart Stores here will discuss the development of a new index that measures the "social and environmental impact" of its products at a press conference.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here will discuss the development of a new index that measures the "social and environmental impact" of its products at a press conference today, reports said yesterday.

"In 2005, Wal-Mart set an aspirational goal to sell products that sustain our resources and environment," Matt Kistler, Wal-Mart's senior vice president of sustainability, was quoted as saying in a Reuters report.

The report said the index, developed with the help of environmental groups, could be used to help determine which products the retailer carries and possibly which ones garner a "green" logo.
