CHICAGO — Walgreen Co. plans to increase its offerings of fresh foods at between 300 and 500 locations across the U.S. in so-called "food deserts," Greg Wasson, president and chief executive officer, said following the chain's annual meeting here.

During the meeting he said expanded fresh offerings fit the company's strategy to evolve from a retail drug store to a retail health and daily living store, according to reports. "Our intent is to own outright the strategic territory of 'well.' Our goal is to help people live well, stay well and get well," Wasson was reported to say.

Expansion of fresh offerings will vary by store and location, Wasson said. However, before Walgreens can implement a large-scale fresh rollout, Wasson said it needs to upgrade its supply chain infrastructure.

Walgreens is based in Deeerfield, Ill.
