ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets here will host Eat a Rainbow demonstration stations to promote the consumption of a variety of colors and forms of produce by kids, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through May 9.

The easy-to-spot stations will be identified with colored balloons and feature fresh, frozen, canned and dried fruits and vegetables, as well as 100% juice.

“Purple balloons recently signaled a sampling of frozen blueberries atop waffles,” said Mary Ellen Burris, senior vice president of consumer affairs, in her latest column. “This week there are red balloons because there’s smooth marinara sauce (tomatoes count) over frozen ravioli … and frozen spinach is added to the marinara sauce (a little stealth health).”

Eat A Rainbow handouts will be distributed during the events. They feature ideas for every meal, and tips for parents.

“Most children need to be offered a new food — and, very important, see their parents eating that new food — up to a dozen times before it becomes familiar and accepted,” said Burris. “So don’t just give up because the nose is turned up the first time.”
