Wegmans Seeks Support for N.Y. Wine Proposal

Wegmans Food Markets is soliciting shopper support for a New York state budget proposal that would allow grocers to sell wine alongside food.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets here is soliciting shopper support for a New York state budget proposal that would allow grocers to sell wine alongside food.

Visitors to its website are met with a banner that reads "This might be the only chance for wine in NY Supermarkets," and invited to take action by emailing one of two form letters, supporting the measure, to their state representative. A phone directory is also available for shoppers wanting to contact their representative via phone.

"Our customers in other states enjoy the excitement and knowledge we bring to wine," says Wegmans on its site. "After only 10 months of operation our Dulles, Va., store was named the "Best Wine and Cheese" shop in the Washington, D.C., area by Washingtonian magazine."

The push comes just weeks before New York’s April 1 budget deadline. Price Chopper Supermarkets, Schenectady, N.Y., has placed a similar form letter on its website.
