Wegmans Warns Shoppers to Beware of Check Scam

Wegmans Food Markets here last week warned consumers not to fall victim to a scam that involves fraudulent checks bearing the company’s name.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets here last week warned consumers not to fall victim to a scam that involves fraudulent checks bearing the company’s name. The checks have been mailed with a letter that asks the recipient to pay up-front fees before the check can be cashed. The face amount of the checks varies and so does the explanation for why the check was sent. Some of the letters announce a sweepstakes winning; others offer the chance to be a secret shopper at Wegmans. Some consumers — mostly people living in states outside of Wegmans’ market area — have contacted Wegmans to inquire about the checks. “We immediately notified law enforcement authorities when we became aware of the bogus checks, and the matter is now in their hands," said Jo Natale, Wegmans’ director of media relations, in a statement. “We urge consumers who receive such a check to contact their local authorities.”
