Weis Holds Pricing, Posts Q3 Sales Gain

SUNBURY, Pa. — Absorbing a "significant portion" of its cost increases helped Weis Markets drive comparable sales up by 6.5% in the third quarter, the company here said.

Net income increased 4.1% to $17 million on a 6% sales gain to $678.6 million in the 13-week period, which ended Sept. 24.

"Cautious consumer spending due to the poor economy continues to impact our business," Robert F. Weis, Weis Markets' chairman, said in a statement. "Fuel and wholesale inflation impacted our business during the period. We absorbed a significant portion of these cost increases during the quarter and did not pass them on to our customers."
