Weston Seeking to Sell U.S. Bakery Business

TORONTO — George Weston here confirmed yesterday that a subsidiary is in discussions with Grupo Bimbo regarding the possible sale of its U.S. fresh bread and baked goods business.

No agreement has been reached and there can be no assurance that any transaction will be concluded, said Weston, which is also the parent of the Loblaw supermarket chain.

Last month, Weston sold its dairy assets in Canada to Saputo. George Weston is the largest supplier of baked goods in the U.S. with brands including Thomas, Stroehmann, Boboli, Arnold, Entemann’s, Freihofer’s and Brownberry. Bimbo is based in Mexico.
