Whole Foods Seeks London Sites

LONDON — Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas, said it is actively seeking store sites in London after several years of inactivity in the United Kingdom.

In an article in the Financial Times here, Walter Robb, co-president, said the chain is looking for locations that would be less than half the size of the 75,000-square-foot flagship store Whole Foods opened in Kensington in 2007.

"We want to build more stores in London — it's a fabulous city. It's harder to find real estate there, but we have some stuff there and we're working on it."

In reporting first-quarter results earlier this year, Whole Foods said the Kensington store has seen double-digit comparable-store sales improvement, although it is still operating at a loss.

Whole Foods also operates several smaller Fresh & Wild stores in the U.K., whose sales are also improving, the company said.
