Winn-Dixie Sees Little Impact from Albertsons Sale

Winn-Dixie Stores said yesterday it does not expect Publix Super Markets’ acquisition of 49 Albertsons in Florida to have a major impact on its business.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores here said yesterday it does not expect Publix Super Markets’ acquisition of 49 Albertsons in Florida to have a major impact on its business. “Based on our analysis, only 10 of the 49 stores are within a 2-mile operating radius of a Winn-Dixie location that does not currently compete with an existing Publix," Peter Lynch, chief executive officer, Winn-Dixie, said in a prepared statement. "As a result, we do not believe this transaction will have a material impact on our long-term strategy or performance." Winn-Dixie’s stock slid about 10% this week, closing yesterday at $16.02. Publix, the dominant supermarket chain in Florida, is expected to relaunch the acquired stores under the Publix banner later this year.
