Winn-Dixie Urges Hurricane Preparedness

Winn-Dixie Stores said yesterday it is urging consumers and businesses to make plans ahead of time at the start of hurricane season, which officially starts Monday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores here said yesterday it is urging consumers and businesses to make plans ahead of time at the start of hurricane season, which officially starts Monday.

“Now is the time to prepare for a tropical storm,” Robin Miller, the chain's director of communications said.

Emergency agencies urge people to have a "hurricane kit" on hand, she noted, with enough bottled water, canned and non-perishable foods, paper products, flashlights and batteries to last at least three days, plus first-aid supplies.

Miller said Winn-Dixie has also equipped its regional distribution centers here and in Miami and Orlando, Fla., and Hammond, La., and the 82 stores it operates in those areas with 500-kilowatt, diesel-powered generators “to allow us to be better prepared to serve our customers in the event of a storm.”

The chain is also selling weather radios, which broadcast emergency local warnings issued by the National Weather Service and which are powered by normal hourse currents wtih a battery backup.
