The National Grocers Association said the definition of a fulltime employee is high on the minds of retailers, wholesalers and state association executives participating in the annual “Day in Washington” meetings with elected officials.

The two-day event, which will conclude today, encompasses members of NGA, Food Marketing Institute and the Food Industry Association Executives.

According to Peter J. Larkin, NGA president and CEO, the Affordable Care Act defines a fulltime employee as one working an average of 30 hours per week per month.  He said the industry has been steadfastly seeking flexibility and ways to minimize new burdens under the ACA to continue to provide quality health coverage that is affordable to employees and employers.

“It is increasingly important that policymakers in Washington hear firsthand from grocery executives about how legislation and regulations directly impact the supermarket industry, their employees and ultimately the consumers they serve,” Larkin said.

Leslie G. Sarasin, president and CEO of FMI, said supermarkets are “where real-life economic, social and health concerns of the American public become manifest.  With such a close working relationship with their customers, food retailers are the voice our legislators need most to hear to help heal the existing disconnect between Washington D.C. and the citizens they represent.”

Other issues likely to be discussed include tax reform, chain restaurant menu labeling and data security, NGA noted.

In other news, NGA said it has presented its Leadership Award to Brandon Scholz, president and CEO of the Wisconsin Grocers Association, for his dedication and contributions to the independent supermarket industry.

Larkin said Scholz is held in high regard ‘[for] his participation and involvement in various educational and advocacy programs and industry events [that] have raised the visibility of the independent grocer.”
