A&P Promotes Flu-Fighting Foods

MONTVALE, N.J. — With an earlier and busier flu season now in full swing, retailers are promoting not only vaccinations, but also food and beverages that can help build the immune system.

A&P-banner stores conducted an email blast to loyalty card holders this week promoting a medicine guide and sales of four items that can help fight the flu. Items on sale include pineapples, $2.99 each.

The email included a “fact” box stating that pineapples are an excellent source of vitamin C, which helps support a healthy immune system “giving you a fighting chance from getting the flu.”

Also on sale are Florida’s Natural Premium Orange Juice, 2 for $6, 59 fluid ounces; and Stonyfield’s Oikos Greek Yogurt, 4 for $5. “Studies show that eating a daily cup of lo-fat yogurt can reduce your susceptibility to colds by 25%,” a “fact” box read.

The sale runs through Jan. 24.

The email also promoted a BOGO sale the chain’s “Live Better” private-label vitamins and supplements, and contained a link to a flu prevention guide.
