Hy-Vee Features Shawn Johnson on Magazine Cover

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Shawn Johnson, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist who announced her retirement from competitive gymnastics this week, is featured on the cover Hy-Vee’s just-released summer issue of Seasons magazine.

“Gold medalist Shawn Johnson won't be competing in the London Summer Olympic Games. So how will she keep life in balance outside the gym?” Hy-Vee writes on its Facebook page today. “The new issue of Hy-Vee Seasons magazine has the story.”

The 20-year-old from West Des Moines, Iowa, seemed intent on returning to the Olympics, but announced her retirement on Sunday, saying, in part, that a knee injury made it impossible to get a spot on the U.S. Olympic team at the London Summer Olympic games. Though the Seasons interview took place before she announced her retirement, Johnsons addressed the knee injury, a result of a 2010 skiing accident, and the challenges of making the Olympic team.

Meanwhile, she praised Hy-Vee for its long-term support of her career. “I hope to stay connected with Hy-Vee forever,” Johnson says in Seasons. “They’re like family. They’ve always believed in the person I am, ever since I was 13. “
