“Our relationships with farmers across the Midwest mean Hy-Vee customers will enjoy the freshest produce available,” Hy-Vee states on its Facebook page. “We'll be telling their stories here all summer.”

All locally produced products feature a Hy-Vee Homegrown label. The retailer is also using shelf signs to identify which farms produced foods sold at Hy-Vee.

Other retailers are doing the same. Safeway, as part of its “Fresh From Our Farmers” campaign, has posted an interactive map on its website that gives the location and description of its 150 local suppliers.

Also on the retailer’s website and Facebook page are video profiles of several local producers  In one video, Bill Zirkle of apple grower Rainier Farms, Selah, Wash., talks about the long-term partnership between his business and Safeway.
