Wal-Mart Index: Red and Blue States Tied in Earth-Friendly Item Adoption

Wal-Mart’s Live Better Index indicates that both Red and Blue states share an 18% adoption rate of five ecologically friendly products being tracked by the retailer.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart’s Live Better Index indicates that both Red and Blue states share an 18% adoption rate of five ecologically friendly products being tracked by the retailer. They include compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), extended-life paper products, organic baby food, concentrated laundry detergent and organic milk. Blue states lead in sales of organic baby food, CFLs and concentrated liquid laundry detergent, while Red states buy more organic milk and extended-life paper products. “The Live Better Index data can serve as an indicator of America’s environmental behaviors, as we have more than 80% of Americans shopping our stores,” said Stephen Quinn, Wal-Mart’s chief marketing officer, in a statement. “Through our research we found that nearly half (43%) of Americans expect to be extremely green in the next five years. The high demand for our environmentally friendly products suggests that the environment will be a hot topic for next year’s election.”
