Consumers Union Urges Signing of Clone Labeling Bill

Consumers Union has urged California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign into law a bill passed by the state legislature that would require labeling of meat and milk sourced from cloned animals.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Consumers Union has urged California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign into law a bill passed by the state legislature that would require labeling of meat and milk sourced from cloned animals. A recent CU poll shows 89% of respondents want such labeling, said Elisa Odabashian, director of Consumers Union’s West Coast office. Knowing that a majority of consumers want labeling, trade and marketing groups say they are working together on that and other cloning issues. “We [at the National Meat Association] are committed to finding a way to make such labeling possible,” said Jeremy Russell, director of communications and government relations at National Meat Association, Oakland, Calif. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a preliminary “risk assessment” statement last December that said it considers meat and milk from some cloned animals safe for human consumption and that labeling such products is not necessary. A final “risk assessment” statement from the FDA is expected by the end of the year.
