WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — A division of Dole Food Co. here issued an international voluntary recall of Dole’s Hearts Delight salad mix after a sample taken from a store in Canada tested positive for E. coli, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned consumers not to eat Hearts Delight, a ready-to-eat lettuce mix. The product was sold in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime Provinces in Canada; and in Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and some neighboring states in the U.S. The romaine, green leaf and butter lettuce hearts that went into the blend were grown in California, Colorado and Ohio, then processed at Dole’s plant in Springfield, Ohio, on Sept. 6. As of Tuesday, Sept. 18, no illnesses have been reported to Dole or to Canadian health officials, reports said. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the CFIA are both monitoring the issue and attempting to determine at what point in the supply chain the products may have become contaminated. Eighty-eight cases were distributed in Canada and 755 cases in the United States. “Our overriding concern is for consumer safety,” Eric Schwartz, president of the Dole Fresh Vegetable division, said in a statement. “We are working closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and several U.S. state health departments.”
