WEIS TO OPEN NEW GREENCHILL STORES

HANOVER, Pa. — Weis Markets here has announced that three of its new superstore locations currently under construction in Bellefonte, West Lawn and Fork Township, Pa., will incorporate technologies and systems that will reduce refrigerant usage to 50% less than a typical supermarket, according to a release issued by the Environmental Protection Agency. The announcement was made here last week during an award ceremony at the company's Carlisle Street location, which was the first supermarket in Pennsylvania to earn a certification award from the EPA's GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership. “Reducing the environmental impact of our stores is a key part of being a good neighbor and we are committed to doing so in the years ahead,” Kevin Small, vice president of construction and development for Weis Markets, said in the release. “As a long-time proponent of sustainability and recycling, we have embraced the next generation of technology that will allow us to reduce our carbon footprint and operate our stores more efficiently. We plan for these three new stores to achieve GreenChill certification.”

JINDAL DEMANDS SEAFOOD CAMPAIGN

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal last week urged the launch of a $173 million, long-term seafood testing and marketing campaign for Gulf seafood, funded by BP. “We need to be able to demonstrate, based on hundreds of samples every month, that this continues to be the safest seafood you can get anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world,” Jindal said at a press conference. With the Deepwater Horizon oil leak finally capped, and with BP now claiming that up to three-quarters of the Gulf Oil spill has been recaptured, dispersed or biodegraded, Louisiana has reopened several areas to commercial shrimp and finfishing. U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg recently reported that levels of oil found on shrimp and fish samples from the previously closed areas have been “significantly below the threshold of concern.” However, the regional fishing industry still must contend with the perception that Gulf seafood is unsafe.
