MINNEAPOLIS — Target plans to offer perishables in the stores it will begin opening in Canada in 2013, a company source told The Globe and Mail in Toronto.
“Food, as it is in the U.S., will be a critical part of our assortment,” Tony Fisher, president of Target Canada, told the paper. “I can be confident we will have some of that fresh food.”
Fisher added that the company does not have plans to bring its SuperTarget format stores to Canada, when it begins the planned rollout of more than 200 new locations by 2017.
Target in January purchased the leases of more than 200 Zellers locations from Hudson Bay Co., with plans to convert the stores. Fisher told The Globe and Mail that the stores are, on average, 100,000 square feet.
