ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets here got an early start on the fall season last weekend, hosting a chainwide back-to-school event featuring samples, recipe cards, tips and ideas for back-to-school meals in its fresh-food departments.

In produce departments, shoppers learned how to make a perfect baked potato and got ideas for different toppings. Deli and prepared-food departments featured samples of rotisserie chicken. Customers could also pick up recipe cards suggesting different ways to use the chicken and save money. Meal stations offered recipes for entrees like grilled mustard pork tenderloin and sides such as southwestern fruit salad, along with recipes for these dishes. In bakery, whole grain blueberry muffins were highlighted; in dairy departments, new Snack & Go Hummus packs were featured as a great snack option for lunch.

The event, which took place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the company's website, had various stations set up in other departments as well.

Shoppers could pick up copies of a “How to Pack the Perfect Lunch” checklist, along with their lunch bags, reusable bags or freezer packs. Those stopping by the frozens department were greeted with blueberry peach smoothie samples, and in the cereal aisle, Wegmans' own private-label cereals were highlighted with samples of Cinnamon Squares with raisins and Blueberry Muffin Squares with dried cherries or blueberries.
