MINNEAPOLIS — A lawsuit was filed today against Cargill Inc. here by a Minnesota family whose two children suffered E. coli infections after consuming the company’s frozen ground beef products, said the family’s attorney, William Marler, who has been involved in E. coli cases since the 1993 Jack in the Box outbreak, published reports said. Cargill had no comment on the lawsuit at this time, said spokesman Mark Klein, according to a published report. The lawsuit was filed in Dakota County District Court on behalf of Dakota County residents Eric and Jennifer Gustafson and their two children, Callie and Carson, who both suffered E. coli infections after eating Cargill ground beef patties at a barbecue in September. Earlier this month, Cargill recalled 844,812 pounds of frozen beef patties due to possible E. coli contamination after investigators found four cases of illness linked to meat prepared by Cargill and sold by a division of Wal-Mart Stores in Minnesota.
