WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced that beef supplied by Nebraska Beef Ltd. of Omaha with sell-by dates between May 21 and July 5 is most likely responsible for at least 40 cases of E. coli infection reported in Ohio and Michigan. In addition to those states, Nebraska Beef said that some contaminated products were also distributed to Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania. However, the news has prompted retailers to pull more than half a million pounds of product from their shelves in stores as far away as Southern California, according to the Los Angeles Times. Last week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked the E. coli outbreaks in Michigan and Ohio, and said that more than half of the people sickened had reported purchasing ground beef from Kroger stores.
