FreshDirect Launches Sustainable Seafood Info Service

LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. — FreshDirect, the online grocer serving New York City, announced yesterday that it has partnered with the Marine Stewardship Council and the Blue Ocean Institute to provide its customers with a reliable source of information about sustainable seafood choices. The grocer will provide online information on over 40 species and varieties of seafood with a simple stoplight format. Green-rated species are considered abundant; yellow-rated species have some problems either with their population status or how they are harvested or farmed; and red-rated species are considered to have a combination of problems that should lead concerned customers to avoid those species. “FreshDirect offers a wide variety of choices to our customers,” said Justin Harwyluk, FreshDirect’s manager of Seafood procurement. “We want them to have the information they need to make the choice that’s right for them. And the Internet allows convenient delivery of information on sustainability while customers are determining what seafood they would like to buy.”
