NEW ORLEANS — Domestic seafood caught the spotlight here last Saturday when the new consumer guide to domestic seafood, “Fish Watch: U.S. Seafood Facts,” was unveiled by a U.S. Department of Commerce official at the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board's 4th Annual Seafood Cookoff. Dr. Bill Hogarth, assistant administrator at the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, who served as one of the cookoff's judges, announced that NOAA has developed a comprehensive website for seafood consumers. The website, www.fishwatch.noaa.gov, has more than 30 of the most popular domestic seafood species, such as red snapper. The Louisiana Seafood Board's Cookoff, which in the past has been open only to chefs, was opened up to the public this year. “It was a good way to emphasize the availability of sustainable, domestic seafood,” Ewell Smith, executive director, Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board, told SN. “The combination, folded into one, absolutely helped bring the consumer together with domestic seafood and good information about it.”
