Urban Radish to Bring Fresh Foods to Downtown L.A.

LOS ANGELES — Urban Radish, a market with a focus on fresh foods, broke ground here in the Downtown Arts District this week.

The specialty grocery store will be housed in a converted 8,200-square-foot, former glass manufacturing warehouse. Sustainable design features include the use of native plants to cover and insulate the building, and one of the largest electric car charging stations in the U.S. in the parking lot.

The market plans to sell local and seasonal fresh produce, high quality meats and seafood, dairy and prepared meals, which customers can enjoy in the outdoor seating area.

“The Arts District has emerged as a highly sought after neighborhood for creative businesses and residents alike, but remains true to its roots as a close-knit artist community,” Tyler Stonebreaker, founder and CEO of Creative Space, the firm hired to repurpose the warehouse, said in a statement. “It was important to Urban Radish that this market reflect the unique needs and vibe of the neighborhood in everything from the architecture to products sold.”

Urban Radish is scheduled to open in March 2013.
