No Work Stoppage for Acme as Deadline Approaches

PHILADELPHIA — Workers have pledged not to strike Acme Markets — and the retailer has said it would not lock out union members — when the current contract with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776 expires this week.
However, Acme, a division of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, said it may choose to implement portions of its most recent contract offer — or reduce the offer if circumstances change — should the retailer and the local here remain at an impasse when the contract expires on Friday.
The parties have been negotiating with the help of federal mediators, but remain at an impasse, an Acme spokesman told SN Wednesday. Workers last month voted to reject the company's latest offer, which Acme said remains on the table.
