POSTVILLE, Iowa – Sholom Rubashkin, son of Agriprocessors owner Abraham Aaron Rubashkin and a former plant manager, has been charged with conspiracy to harbor undocumented immigrants for financial gain, aiding and abetting document fraud, and aiding and abetting aggravated identity theft. In May, the Postville, Iowa, plant was raided, and agents arrested 389 workers, more than 30 of which were reportedly children. Agents also seized dozens of fraudulent permanent resident alien cards during the raid. Yesterday, Iowa’s labor commissioner fined the company nearly $10 million for alleged wage violations. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which had been trying to organize workers at Agriprocessors and other meat and poultry companies despite the raids, applauded the arrest, a published report said. Rubashkin faces a minimum of two years in prison if convicted, according to prosecutors.
