MINNEAPOLIS — Jewel-Osco, a division of Supervalu here, has received GreenChill Gold Certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recognizing the store’s eco-friendly refrigeration system, for a recently opened “green” store on Chicago’s far South Side.
Jewel-Osco also designed the “store according to the standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), established by the U.S. Green Building Council. The store includes a roof with vegetation beds for energy conservation and storm water run-off reduction; water-saving fixtures and faucets; and energy-efficient lighting, heating and air conditioning.
“Wherever possible, we’re focused on building environmentally friendly technology into our new and remodeled stores,” said Jewel-Osco President Keith Nielsen.
