Congress Finalizes Farm Bill; White House Renews Criticism

WASHINGTON — Congress yesterday announced that it has finalized a new version of the 2007 Farm Bill, which will increase support for federal nutrition programs such as food stamps, as well as for conservation and renewable energy programs. The newly negotiated version of the bill will also cut subsidies for many crops and will lower the income limits that allow farmers to qualify for the subsidies. However, Jim Nussle, director of the White House budget office, yesterday told the Associated Press that the bill is still too expensive and too generous to wealthy farmers, and that it will not likely receive support from President Bush.
