WASHINGTON — The Senate will likely re-vote on the full 2007 Farm Bill this week, Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin’s office told congressional newspaper The Hill on Friday. The bill was passed two weeks ago, by solid margins in both the House and Senate. However, President Bush, arguing that the bill was still too generous with subsidies to corn, wheat, soybean and cotton growers, promptly vetoed it. Congress overrode his veto, but then realized that due to a clerical error, the $300 billion piece of legislation was missing an entire title when it was given to President Bush for review, raising a number of constitutional questions. Several industry groups, including the Grocery Manufacturers of America, have agreed with Bush’s criticism of the bill. The produce industry, however, has emphasized that if this version of the bill passes, the country of origin labeling requirements set to go into effect on Sept. 30 this year will be significantly less burdensome for retailers.
