R.I. Independent Joins GreenChill, Wins Award

WESTERLY, R.I. — McQuade’s Marketplace, a three-store independent, has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Partnership, and promptly earned GreenChill’s gold-level award for its store here.
“EPA is very excited to have McQuade’s Marketplace join GreenChill," said Keilly Witman, program manager for EPA’s GreenChill Partnership. “Many people think that it’s only the big companies who have the resources to ‘go green,’ but McQuade’s is showing that you don’t have to be bigger, you just have to be better.”
GreenChill participants commit to using non-ozone-depleting refrigerants in new or remodeled stores, and reducing annual refrigerant emissions.
McQuade’s Westerly store achieved GreenChill’s gold-level store certification by reducing its refrigerant emissions by 95% vs. standard supermarket refrigeration systems. Hill Phoenix, Conyers, Ga., supplied the store with secondary loop refrigeration systems for both low temperature and medium temperature applications.
“Every business should do what they can to protect the environment for our children and grandchildren,” said Michael McQuade, president, McQuade’s Marketplace, in a statement. “Our customers might not be aware of all the technical differences, but this equipment is the most environmentally friendly equipment we could find, and it will allow us to continue to provide our customers with the freshest meat, seafood and produce available.”
