Sustainability Task Force Calls for Use of Reusable Bags 

LAS VEGAS — The Food Marketing Institute’s Sustainability Task Force has recommended to the FMI board that the food retailing industry “should promote the use of reusable bags” instead of paper or plastic bags, said Bob Garrity, senior vice president, store planning, construction & conservation for Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh. Garrity, chairman of the task force, provided an update on its activities on Monday at the FMI Show/Marketechnics here. The task force is also calling for making the recycling process of paper and plastic bags available to consumers. Garrity added that the task force expects federal legislation on carbon footprint restrictions will be passed. In response, “we should have a common language on what a carbon footprint is and what we should do as an industry,” he said. “We’re working on providing tools the industry can use to understand [the meaning of] carbon footprint.”...
