Sponsor Petitions Kroger Shareholders on ‘Toxic’ Proposal

SAN FRANCISCO — Catholic Healthcare West, a hospital chain here and shareholder in Kroger Co., has sent a letter to Kroger shareholders urging them to support its proposal to require the retailer to report on emerging product safety issues. Kroger, Cincinnati, in its proxy report has recommended shareholders vote against the proposal at the retailer’s annual meeting later this month. In its letter, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, CHW said Kroger’s response was “inadequate” and cited examples of competing retailers that it said had better responses to the environmental toxicity issues raised in its proposal.
