Mintel: Consumers Cut Costs by Dining Out Less

CHICAGO — More than half (54%) of people who dine out regularly are cutting back on restaurant spending due to the economy, according to the findings of a Mintel consumer report. Seventy percent of those who are trying to curb their out-to-eat spending are saving money by going out to eat less, rather than by choosing cheaper entrees or dining at less expensive restaurants. Home cooking has become a popular alternative. Mintel found that 72% of people who regularly cook at home do so because it is cheaper than other options. “Especially when you consider the price of casual and fine dining, staying in can reduce costs significantly,” said David Morris, senior analyst at Mintel, in a statement.
