Brooklyn Fare Kitchen & Market has opened a 25,500-square-foot location in Lower Manhattan.
Located at 227 Cherry Street in Two Bridges, the affordable supermarket is on the ground level of One Manhattan Square, a luxury condo building, where condos start at $1.2 million, according to a blog post in 6sqft New York City.
“Not only is it our first store on the East Side of Manhattan, it’s also our largest store to date,” Brooklyn Fare owner Moe Issa said in the post. “What is even better is that we are providing a much-needed service to the residents of the Lower East Side …”
The chain opened its first store in 2009 and plans to open additional locations in West Village, Hudson Yards, Lincoln Square, and Brooklyn, according to a story in Timeout New York City.
“The new store measures 25,500 square feet, features an all-glass storefront and 20-foot ceilings, and offers a variety of fresh produce, prepared foods, and more, at an affordable price,” the 6sqft New York City blog post noted.
The new store fills the void left by the closure of a Pathmark grocery store in the neighborhood in 2012.
The new store comes at a time of big change for grocery in New York City with new stores opening across the city, some of which have replaced big-box stores shuttered during the pandemic.
Whole Foods recently opened a store at Harry Macklowe’s 1 Wall St., and plans to open smaller-format 7,000- to 14,000-square-foot Whole Foods Daily Shop locations.
Wegmans opened two locations within the last year in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and at Vornado’s 770 Broadway in Astor Place. And German discount grocer Lidl has opened stores in Staten Island, Harlem, and Queens.
