New Star Market to Be the First All-LED Store

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Supervalu will be opening a Star Market outlet in Chesnut Hill, Mass., on Oct. 30 that will be the first supermarket to use high-efficiency LED lighting for all lighting applications inside and outside the store, said Keith Tarver, manager of electrical systems for Minneapolis-based Supervalu.
He mentioned the opening during a presentation on LED lighting yesterday here at the Food Marketing Institute’s Energy & Technical Services Conference. LED lighting, which lasts much longer and is more energy efficient that fluorescent lighting, has been used in outside signage and in refrigerated and frozen cases in supermarkets, but not in overhead lighting. At the Star Market, LED lighting will also be used to illuminate the parking lot.
The all-LED lighting will make the new store “an interesting one to see,” said Tarver, who added that anyone interested in touring the store is welcome to do on Nov. 17.
