NEW YORK — The North American organic coffee market reached $1 billion in 2007, according to Daniele Giovannucci, author of the North American Organic Coffee Industry Survey. He presented the findings here yesterday during a sampling event hosted by the Organic Coffee Collaboration. The amount of organic coffee imported into the U.S. and Canada increased 29% from 2006 to 2007 from approximately 65 million pounds to 84 million pounds, Giovannucci said. He estimates the organic coffee sector represented 3% of the total U.S. green coffee imports in 2007, growing an average of 32% annually between 2000 and 2007. He attributes the growth to personal health and food safety concerns and the desire to support organic production practices.
