ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — 7-Eleven's hot food merchandising pilots revealed that pizzas prepared in-store are the third-fastest moving SKU, exceeding sales of cigarettes and certain cups of coffee, explained Dennis Phelps, vice president of fresh foods for the chain, during yesterday's session "Winning Consumers in the On the Go Moment" part of GMA's Merchandising, Sales and Marketing conference. The pilot program, which launched in March, presented shoppers with a menu of hot foods including pizza, chicken wings, chicken tenders, Jamaican beef patties and cinnamon churros, with most prepared using high-speed TurboChef Ovens, according to a published report. The convenience store chain is rolling out the menu in additional locations. "We'll have another 600 stores converted by the of the year, and 2,000 by the end of next year," he said. "The sections give us the ability to sell pizza in 90 seconds and toasted sandwiches in 45 seconds."
