Safeway Raises $14.5M for Cancer Research

Safeway said its stores raised $14.5 million for breast cancer research during the month of October.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here said Tuesday its stores raised $14.5 million for breast cancer research during the month of October. The company said it has raised more than $108 million for the cause over the last 11 years.

The donations have come from customers' checkstand donations, specal in-store fundraising events and community events.

The funds go to a variety of sources, Safeway said, including an agency that helps direct patients to clinical trials personalized to their situations; medical centers that monitor cancer patients in an effort to find new approaches to research, technology and health care delivery; and a consortium seeking new breast cancer drugs.

Safeway also partners with hospitals and cancer centers to finance mobile mammography units that operate in underserved communities around the U.S.
