Sobeys: Bag Surcharge Exceeding Provincial Reduction Targets

STELLARTON, Nova Scotia — Sobeys here said Monday that its stores in Ontario have exceeded provincial targeted guidelines for reducing plastic bag usage.
In less than six months since discontinuing complimentary bags and initiating a 5-cent per bag surcharge, Sobeys stores in Ontario — operating under the Sobeys, Foodland and IGA banners — reduced plastic bag consumption by 72%, exceeding the provincial target of 50%.
