UFCW Tweaks Ahold in Cookie Buy

RICHMOND, Va. The union representing workers at Kroger Co. stores here said Friday that it would invite local Girl Scouts organizations to sell cookies in front of Virginia Kroger stores.
The move comes in response to news that Ahold, the new owner of Ukrops stores in the area, said it would no longer continue the tradition of allowing community groups to assemble at its stores once they change to the Martins Food banner.
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 added that it would buy 100 boxes of cookies at a Kroger location to support the change. Martins, like Ukrops, is a non-union chain.
