UFCW Joins Coalition for Affordable Health Care

WASHINGTON — The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union here said yesterday it will mobilize its 1.3 million members to support Health Care for America Now, a coalition of labor, medical and business organizations that announced a national campaign yesterday for affordable quality health care for all Americans. "While there may be gridlock in Washington, there is consensus in America. The American people want solutions. We need health care for America now," UFCW President Joe Hansen said. The coalition said it plans to spend approximately $65 million to convince politicians, including both parties' presidential candidates, to support universal access to medical coverage. According to a press statement, the coalition plans to encourage lawmakers to devise a plan that would offer consumers the choice of retaining their current private coverage, choosing a new insurance plan or joining a government-run plan.
