NEW YORK — A retail union here said a recent report detailing expired food and medicine in state drug stores further illustrates the need for legislation promoting development of grocery stores in underserved neighborhoods. As reported last week in SN, New York state’s attorney general’s office threatened a lawsuit against drug chains CVS and Rite Aid after an investigation found the chains sold expired goods at its stores. In a statement Tuesday, John R. Durso, president of Local 338 of the Retail Worker Department Store/United Food and Commercial Workers union here “proves that we shouldn’t rely on drug stores to provide necessary food items to the community.” The union supports a program of incentives and tax breaks to encourage development of supermarkets.
