Union Group Challenges Wal-Mart on Worker Rights
Sep 2, 2009 6:00 AM, By JON SPRINGER
WASHINGTON — The United Food and Commercial Workers union, along with other coalition partners, here on Tuesday announced a campaign challenging Wal-Mart to change its corporate practices for the sake of the economy and the communities in which it operates.
The “American Values Agenda” calls for the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer to promote worker rights; improve job training, workplace fairness and corporate responsibility; and develop more local sourcing. The group added that it would develop an “accountability project” to rate Wal-Mart’s progress, build local coalitions to promote its agenda, and convene a summit to discuss the matters.
As part of the launch, the union-backed Wake Up Wal-Mart group has launched a new television ad campaign highlighting Wal-Mart’s health care.
