Wal-Mart Sees Sales Bump From Tax Checks

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here yesterday said it believes it is seeing a sales boost from the economic stimulus checks that taxpayers recently began receiving. In reporting same-store sales growth of 4.4% (3.9% excluding fuel) for the four weeks that ended May 30, the company also said its grocery sales have remained strong in the weak economy because of its aggressive pricing. In a media tour yesterday ahead of its annual shareholders meeting scheduled for today, the company also outlined a streamlined apparel selection focused on basics and a revamped electronics department, which the company said was a model for its plans to improve the in-store experience throughout the store, according to reports. Among the company’s in-store initiatives: more signage, lower fixtures and more room in the aisles.
