Wegmans Gives $1-Off Coupons to Reusable Bag Users

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans here is rewarding shoppers who check out with reusable bags with a coupon good for $1 off future purchases on items like Italian Classics frozen family meals, Club Pack fresh meat and a greeting card.
Now in its second week, the program will run through the month of November.
“Many shoppers have asked us to thank them for using reusable bags, pointing out that other stores give anywhere from a penny to a nickel,” said Mary Ellen Burris, Wegmans' senior vice president of consumer affairs, in a recent column. “We’ve had a team working on incentives and are ready to launch an eight-week program.” Upon the program's completion Wegmans will evaluate results and decide about its next move.
The retailer is also hosting a contest whereby $100 gift card will be awarded each week to a winning entry posted in response to a question on wegmans.com. Customers may be asked how they remember to bring their reusable bags to the store, for example. The idea that Wegmans deems best is the winner.
