Wegmans Brand Outsells All Others in Certain Categories

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans’ store brands are outselling any other brand in categories including cereals, salsa, ice cream, frozen vegetables, yogurt and frozen self-rising pizza, reported Mary Ellen Burris, senior vice president of consumer affairs for the chain, in her latest column on the company’s website. She attributes the brands’ success to the strict criteria that must be met before items hit Wegmans’ shelves. “The beginning: an audit of the plant where product is to be produced, if that plant passes the audit; we have two people on the road and in the air continually, checking food safety and quality,” explained Burris. “The middle: Completing the final product specifications or ‘recipe’; and finally, a quality check of the first shipment to make sure it matches specifications. From then on, Wegmans brand specialist Cathy Morse-Lombard monitors comments of customers about the brand’s products, and works with buyers and developers to continually improve.” Wegmans also tests other brands to ensure its delivering value, Burris said.
