Safeway touts sustainable sourcing

Safeway is promoting the fact that its Safeway Home Softly bath and facial tissues and paper towels are produced to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council and the Rainforest Alliance.

“That means the paper comes from responsible forest management practices that sustain the needs of present and future generations,” the retailer wrote in a Facebook post.

The Rainforest Alliance Certified seal assures consumers that the product they are purchasing has been grown and harvested using environmentally and socially responsible practices. Farms and forestlands that meet the rigorous, third-party standards of the Sustainable Agriculture Network or the Forest Stewardship Council are awarded the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal. These standards protect the environment and promote the rights and well-being of workers, their families and communities, according to the Rainforest Alliance.

Other store brands that carry the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal include Save Mart's Sunny Select bathroom tissue and facial tissues.

The FSC sets standards for responsible forest management. Products that are FSC certified help protect forests by creating demand for responsible management. Companies are audited by third parties to make sure they are meeting the standards.

“FSC certifications means that a product is helping protect the world’s forests, along with people and wildlife that depend on them to live,” said Brad Kahn, spokesman for the Forest Stewardship Council.
